Of course, when a Poker strategy involving deception and manipulation is mentioned, bluffing is the first thing that comes to mind. However, while most new players look at bluffing as an amusing ploy, it is actually a very serious tool. Whether you are playing tournaments or cash games, this technique is something that you will need to learn to use.
There are many different types of bluffing in Poker. The traditional bluff, of course, involves calling with a weak hand, representing it as a strong hand; semi bluffing is one wherein you make the bluff with a hand that has a potential for a draw in case you are called.
A newer Poker strategy used for deceiving other players is the floating play. Basically it is calling (with a bluff hand) a continuation bet on the turn. Usually individuals who raise and make continuation bets will fold on the turn. Of course, on a tight table, you can use the continuation bet too. If you miss the flop, make a large bet anyway, and the rocks on the Poker table will fold, handing you the pot.
Among the professionals, a Poker strategy that they often use is that of just talking. A lot of players, especially the new ones, like to chat as much as playing. You can use this to your advantage. Just ask them what kind of hand they hold.
Of course they will not tell you, but just reciting the combinations about, and you will often see the player make a reflex action once you mention the kind of hand he is holding.
One more way of deceiving your opponent in Poker is via the slow play. Basically what you do is to just check call your way in the game once you get the nuts. What you are trying to do is represent a weak hand to the rest of the table. Only when you are at the river do you reveal your strength.
These plays need not be used all the time, or even in the same game, but there will be instances when you will have to employ them so knowledge of these Poker strategies will be absolutely vital. Including these techniques in your arsenal will go a long way towards providing you with the edge.
